It's Bullshit

Sorry you will have to excuse what will be a small mini-rant for me. The Golden Globes are on tonight, an award show that is more dubious than the Oscars and potentially as sketchy as the grammys. It's a given that I will agree with maybe 50% of the award winners but there is one specific category I take issue with:

Best Foreign Language Film.

In an industry consumed by narcissm, anything outside of Hollywood is given the short end of the stick, but I still take issue with the fact that in this category Clint Eastwood and the likes are nominated.

99% of these awards are given to Hollywood studio pics, is that not enough? Instead of leaving the foreign category to actual foreign films it has to be diluted by American films that include subtitles.

Foreign films are often much more cutting edge and willing to deal with issues that Hollywood is too scared to even acknowledge much less consider. In this day and age, where the foreign film is marginilized because the studios are afraid of anything that might amount to competitiion, the least that can be done is allow them to have their own category. Instead it is apparently dominated by american films. How 'Letters to Iwo Jima' was even nominated much less won best foreign film is beyond me. This is nothing against Clint Eastwood who I deeply respect, but american films should not be showing up in any category remotely foreign.
